Church weekend as seen by Seb…

So the church weekend trip is now falling into distant memory. What were the best bits? Seeing Alan’s architecture passion wagon pull up, the whiskys in the bar on saturday, the wonderous church buildings or the fantastic teaching we were given? I guess all contributed to a great weekend. For me, the earliest architectural features provided the most interest; the Saxon windows, blind arcades and mysterious doorway halfway up Barnack Church tower; the remains of the Viking cross shaft found under a church pavement; and the fabulous Romanesque church tower with fishscale decoration at Castor. The enthusiasm of the tutors together with the range of churches we saw has made a significant contribution to my ability to ‘read’ these buildings and I don’t think i’ll look at a church in quite the same way again…
