Sustainability Workshop 2015

The recent sustainability workshop saw practical application of the recent module on sustainability. Working in groups, the students were tasked with considering a series of environmental upgrades to the Grade I listed AA buildings in Bedford Square and its environs, with proposals addressing the buildings and their setting on both a micro and macro scale:

In all instances consideration was given to the impact that your proposals may have on the historic significance of the building, and conversely the value of the improvements that they may produce, offering a valued judgement on the relative benefits of each in both heritage and environmental terms.

The day was introduced by a lecture Peter Cox of Carrig, drawing on material that he has collected internationally in his ongoing studies on the environmental performance of historic buildings for ICOMOS Ireland.

A very stimulating day for all involved, the jury raised some interesting questions on whether buildings like this can be upgraded without damage to their heritage significance, with the resounding answer “YES THEY CAN!”
